Dr. Raymond Rezaie recently discussed five ways you can combat childhood obesity from your home.

Childhood obesity typically begins at home, but it can end at home too. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently stated that more than one-third of children in the United States are obese or overweight. Dr. Raymond Rezaie has focused much of his career on obesity and the harmful effects it can have on the body. He recently discussed five ways parents can help fight childhood obesity at home.

“One of the easiest and most fool-proof ways to fight childhood obesity at home is to truly watch what you put in your pantry,” Dr. Rezaie said. “Stock healthful foods in your pantry and your refrigerator, and your kids will make better choices.”

Dr. Rezaie explained that, as parents, you have control over what your children eat at home. Stocking processed foods and snacks will only lead to the development of bad habits for yourself and your children. Dr. Raymond Rezaie explained that another way to combat childhood obesity is to forego sweetened beverages as a whole. Serve water and milk instead of juice, sports drinks, and soda.

“You need to set a good example for your children.” Dr. Raymond Rezaie said. “If you’re eating unhealthy, processed foods, your kids will too.”

Dr. Raymond Rezaie stated that being a good role model for your children means eating healthy and exercising regularly. He stated that many parents of overweight or obese children struggle with the same issues themselves. A group effort to eat healthy and stay in shape is ideal for everyone in the family.

Dr. Raymond Rezaie added that sedentary activities should also be limited. Children under the age of 2 should not be exposed to screen time, while kids over the age of 2 should be limited to two hours per day. Screen time is sedentary time, and it is essential for kids to remain active.

“Encourage physical play and sports your children enjoy,” Dr. Raymond Rezaie said. “The more your child enjoys a physical activity, the more likely he or she is to do it often.”

Dr. Raymond Rezaie emphasized that encouraging your kids to discover which physical activities they love allows them to have some control over their exercise. Introduce your children to a variety of sports and physical activities, so they can pick and choose which they enjoy the most.

“Research has shown major links between lack of sleep and childhood obesity,” Dr. Raymond Rezaie said. “Kids need age-appropriate amounts of sleep, and many of them aren’t receiving it.”
