“Healthy habits are important no matter your age. As you grow older, however, you may be at increased risk of suffering from cancer, having a heart attack, and other issues,” Dr. Raymond Rezaie notes. “Taking the right steps may improve your health and help you live longer.”

Diet is one of the most important considerations for older individuals. You’ll want a healthy diet without copious amounts of sugar and salt. If you haven’t developed good eating habits by age 50, it’s still not too late to improve.

“A lot of folks try hard crash diets,” Dr. Raymond Rezaie says. “These work for some people, but many quickly ditch their diet. It’s wise to start more slowly. Skip dessert, cut down on snacking. Instead of replacing all of your meals with healthy options, start by switching out one meal then scale up.”

Having trouble controlling your eating habits? Start keeping a food diary, then note calories, sugar levels, sodium content, and other important pieces of information.

You’ll also want to take it easy on the caffeine. Love coffee? Start mixing your coffee with a high-quality decaffeinated blend. You might start with the decaffeinated coffee constituting 20 percent of your brew. Then 30 percent, and then fifty percent. Also, consider tea as an alternative.

You’ll also want to make sure that you regularly visit the doctor and undergo all the necessary examinations. As you get older, the risks of various diseases and conditions can increase. With regular checkups, your doctor might catch a condition early, such as cancer. Often, early diagnosis leads to a better prognosis.

“Check-ins with your doctor are wise. You should also pay close attention to your body. If something seems wrong, talk with a doctor, who can check for problems,” Dr. Raymond Rezaie says. “At the very least, you may enjoy peace of mind if nothing is found.”

Older individuals should also make sure they’re getting enough exercise. You don’t necessarily need intensive workout sessions at the gym. A long walk along the beach or an afternoon swimming in the pool can make a big difference.
